What foods can you freeze?
You know we get these great deals by couponing and sometimes wish we could buy even more, but you know you’re not going to eat it right away. Can you freeze it and take advantage of the deal??
Almost any food can be frozen. Exceptions would be canned food or eggs in shells. Once a food is out of the can, you can freeze it! Now let’s be rational here … you may not like all foods ‘after’ they come out of the freezer! HA! Like mayo, lettuce, etc. YUK! Foods frozen when they are fresh taste better after they have thawed. If you have something that is coming close to its sell by date and you decide to freeze it then it is fine, but it will not have the same quality as it would if you had frozen it immediately. Meat for example; Freeze immediately! If it is to the point where you should be eating it, then you put it in the freezer… you will need to eat it immediately after thawing! It will not have the same freshness to it. There is, however, little change in nutrient value during freezer storage.
Properly prepare your food in packaging before freezing. You can freeze meats in their original packages as long as there are no tears/rips in the wrapping. If there is, just rewrap over the original before placing in the freezer. You can also use specialty freezer bags. (Wait for a good price on them then stock up!!) One thing I do that is GREAT with my chicken breasts is: I take them out of the original packaging and place each one in an individual baggie. Then each of those go together into a larger baggie with the date I placed them in the freezer. This way if we have an unexpected guest I can just grab one out of the freezer and thaw quickly!
Also, try not to stack your packages in the freezer until they have frozen solid. You will want them to be in a single layer as much as possible.
Did you know that freezer burn does not make food unsafe? It makes them dry in those spots so you will want to cut that portion off before preparing for quality reasons.
This is a list of items I freeze or know of others who have had success freezing:
Meats (includes bacon)
Cheese (sliced & shredded)
Bananas (for baking or milkshakes)
Breads (only for a week or 2)
Veggies (blanch them first!)
